Question by amadeus27: How can I heal from a depresion that has lasted 9 years?
I´ve tried almost every chemical antidepresant you can imagine, for example, Paxil and so on. The medication I am taking now is Eskalith CR 450 mg. (lithium) and Lamictal 250 mg. Psychotherapy has been of no use, in my opinion. Religion helps a little but not enough. I live by myself and that doesn´t help very much. I have very few friends and almost no social life. I would like to change my negative thought patterns, may be with Dr. Feuerstein´s method (the only problem is that the benefit will come long term), I´d like to try echinotherapy (riding horses), maybe bio dance, etc, etc. I just don´t want to keep trying so many methods with no results. I regret not having finished my studies in college. I am 27 years old. I just feel I´m stuck, I´m in a hole, that my life is not advancing and improving how it should be.

Try walking and work your way up to at least 3 miles a day. Regular exercise can boost your mood. It won’t take the place of therapies, but it can dramatically help you, and it also helps you sleep.

Maybe you need a new change. Make a fresh start & move to a new town, or state.

HI THERE, DO YOU SUFFER FROM BIPOLAR. MY SON DOES.
I WONDER IF YOU SHOULD JUST GET BUSY GO TO PILATES, WHAT ABOUT TAKING UP PAINTING CLASSES.
YES RELIGION IS OK, BUT YOU REALLY NEED MORE IN YOUR LIFE.
SOME OF THESE PILLS CAN MAKE YOU WORSE OFF.
    TRY ALTERNATIVE WAYS.
I AM IN A PILATES CLASS , HONESTLY I AM FEELING BETTER I AM MORE ASSERTIVE AND OUTGOING.
PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH SOME ORGANISATION AND GET GOING. THERE IS A BEAUTIFUL WORLD OUT THERE. TRY A WALKING GROUP ALSO.
    GOOD LUCK..

First of all, you just identified what is making you feel bad … you feel bad for not completing college! That’s simple to fix, enroll in college again and get your degree. Even if it’s just at the local community college it’d be a great start and you’d feel like you’re working toward something.

I’ve also struggled with anxiety and depression and I’m on lamictal as well. One of the best things that improved my self esteem was that I applied to two graduate programs in subjects I was interested in, and now I feel like I have goals and am moving forward in my life. I still feel depressed at times, but I’m feeling a lot better.

One more thing I want to recommend is emotions anonymous — talking to other people who feel like you do is an awesome way to work through your problems, make friends and feel less alone.

    Wow! I feel for you!

There was some really good advice on this thread (except the “sex! parties!” one)

Maybe you might also think about getting a puppy or kitten if it doesn’t stress you out too much.
