Black Elder/ Sundew Combo: The Influenza Booster
Influenza is a viral infection which affects mainly the nose, throat, bronchi and, occasionally, lungs. This infection usually lasts for about a week, and is characterized by sudden onset of high fever, aching muscles, headache and severe malaise, non-productive cough, sore throat and rhinitis. The influenza virus is transmitted easily from person to person via droplets and small particles produced when infected people cough or sneeze.
Most people eventually recover from influenza after a week, however what is bothersome to most patients are the signs and symptoms associated with it. Thus this heralds the quest for the application of complementary and alternative medicine practices in providing symptomatic relief and nutritional support to flu. It is in this context that PSC Plant Stem Cells Nutrition has created a product to provide relief and immune support to colds, in the form of the Black Elder- Sundew Combo. This product is being distributed by PSC Distribution LLC in the US and Canada through their website planstemells.net.
This complex contains Sambucus Nigra (Black Elder) and Drosera (Sundew). Sambucus Nigra contains a powerful antioxidant which acts as an immune stimulant. This herb has been used through centuries to treat bronchitis, cough, upper respiratory tract infections and fever. A double blind clinical trial published in 1990 showed reduction in both duration and severity of flu-like symptoms for patients receiving elderberry infusion versus placebo.
A study done by Roschek et al (2009) showed that Elderberry flavonoids bind to and prevent H1N1 infection in vitro, a fact which makes them a potential natural alternative to Tamiflu.
Drosera (Sundew) contains several medicinally active compounds including flavonoids, (kaempferol, myricetin, quercetin and hyperoside, quinones (plumbagin, hydroplumbagin glucoside and rossoliside (7 – methyl – hydrojuglone – 4 – glucoside), and other constituents such as carotenoids, plant acids (e.g. butyric acid, citric acid, formic acid, gallic acid, malic acid, propionic acid), resin, tannins and ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
Sundews were used as medicinal herbs as early as the 12th century, when an Italian doctor from the School of Salerno by the name of Matthaeus Platearius described the plant as an herbal remedy for coughs under the name “herba sole”. It has been used commonly in cough preparations in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. Sundew tea was especially recommended by herbalists for dry coughs, bronchitis, whooping cough, asthma and “bronchial cramps”. A modern study has shown that Drosera does exhibit antitussive properties.
Culbreth’s 1927 Materia Medica listed D, rotundifolia, D. anglica and D.linearis as being used as stimulants and expectants, and “of doubtful efficacy” for treating bronchitis, whooping cough, and tuberculosis. Sundews have also been used as an aphrodisiac and to strengthen the heart, as well as to treat sunburn, toothache, and prevent freckles. They are still used today in some 200-300 registered medications, usually in combination with other active ingredients. Today Drosera is usually used to treat ailments such as asthma, coughs, lung infections, and stomach ulcers.
The Black-Elder Sundew Complex—an all-natural alternative to Tamiflu for H1N1 infections!

Influenza is a commonly found disease especially during the time of seasonal flu. The general symptoms of flu are fever, muscle pain, body ache, fatigue, headache and chill etc. the primary symptoms of flu which normally go unnoticed are soar throat, cold and cough. The symptoms of influenza flu are very similar to the symptoms of common cold and fever. However, the effects of influenza are much drastic on the health of the patient than the common cold.
A variety of medications are available in the market these days to prevent influenza. Relenza is one the effective medications prescribed by the doctors. It is referred to treat the uncomplicated cases of influenza. The studies have shown that relenza is effective for those cases which includes the fever in the symptoms. Without fever cases are referred to go through some other kind of treatment. Relenza is a kind of preventive measure that reduces the risk of expanding the illness. The patient should start taking relenza with in two days of seeing symptoms of influenza.
Relenza is a kind of powder which is to be taken through a diskhaler device. It is taken twice a day for five days with the help of breath-activated plastic device i.e. diskhaler in the cases of influenza. If you are taking relenza for preventive use inhale it one time in a day for 10 to 28 days as per the directions of the doctor. Avian Influenza (h5n1)
H5N1 is the virulent strain that causes avian influenza or bird flu. This strain is commonly present in the gut of the wild migratory birds but due to their natural resistance it does not have any effect on them. When wild and domestic stocks mix and the strain passes over to domestic poultry, it turns fatal. This has been clearly indicated by recent large scale outbreaks in China and other South East Asian countries.
Strong measures including quarantine and culling by health authorities did not stop the spread of the infection, which soon emerged in far away places like Africa and Europe. India was badly hit by the outbreak and Central and State Government departments took emergency steps to contain its spread and provide relief to those poultry farmers who lost their entire stock in the process.
As all were concentrating on measures to contain the virus, news came of the H5N1 virus infecting some humans who were in the close proximity of the infected birds and were constantly exposed to their body secretions. It took a while for medical scientists to analyse the infection but once it was confirmed, another battle front needed immediate attention.
WHO (World Health Organisation) lead the global fight against H5N1 virus and world wide pharmaceutical companies began manufacturing anti flu drugs. Some of the most noted and effective drugs against bird flu are Amantadine, Relenza, Rimantadine, Tamiflu and Oseltamivir. These drugs when administered shortly after infection set in were successful to varying degrees in fighting the virus and its flu type symptoms.
In some severe cases of bird flu, respiratory track complications lead to fatalities. Health authorities were concerned about human to human infection. This was reported from some areas but it was also observed that the infection did not persist beyond the second host. If this had not been the case we would have been living through a worst nightmare of modern times.
It is natural to panic when such a virus strain spreads defying geographical limits. Some people began to hoard anti flu drugs fearing a major outbreak. Luckily it did not come about. Today the virus seems to have gone dormant once again. But this is the most critical period that we should utilise to strengthen our defenses and put into place contingency measures which will automatically kick-in in the case of the next major outbreak.
Poultry management techniques have since been reviewed and altered to include stringent health check-ups of domestic birds. A proactive approach is necessary to prevent another incident. Hopefully we will learn from past experience and provide for a safe future.

Swine flu nowhere near 1918 influenza
“It could be much, much worse,” Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s chief public health officer told a gathering Thursday at the Solana Beach Presbyterian Church. “While it is killing people, it’s lacking the virulent gene of the flu pandemic of 1918.”
The vaccine supply, now put at about 42 million doses nationwide, continues to trickle into local health care offices but is not yet widely available, prompting concern that some who had planned to get it may decide to skip it, Wooten said.
Since the H1N1 virus first emerged in the spring, Wooten said, 583 county residents have been hospitalized.
The average age of those who have contracted it is 26, and the average age of those admitted to hospitals is 31, Wooten said.
Among those who have succumbed locally and nationally, the vast majority have had serious underlying medical conditions such as cancer, obesity or diabetes, Wooten said.
Many of those who came out to hear the update sponsored by the Del Mar-Solana Beach Community Response Team wanted to know what symptoms to be aware of, how the virus is affecting children and what the major risk factors are.
A fever of more than 100 degrees along with a persistent cough, headaches and sinus congestion are common hallmarks.
Wooten said children under age 5 who exhibit symptoms should be taken to a doctor immediately.
For those that get sick, Tamiflu, a pill, remains the primary medication. The drug lessens the symptoms but will not cure the illness.
Her presentation came the same day that California health officials said the virus has hospitalized 5,380 state residents, and the same day that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said swine flu has sickened about 22 million Americans.
The federal agency also said that nearly 4,000 people have died, most of them about 12 days after getting sick.
The major issue that continues to confront public health officials and private physicians is the vaccine supply.
The federal government had estimated that a sufficient stock would have been available by now, but additional time required to produce it has delayed widespread distribution.
“We created an expectation in the summer that there would be enough vaccine,” Wooten said. “The vaccine will get here, but this issue that worries us now is will people still be interested?”
They should be, she said, because health officials anticipate a third wave of the virus to hit in the spring of next year.
The first wave occurred this spring and the second wave is occurring now.
One bright spot on the flu front is a lack of seasonal flu being seen locally and nationwide, Wooten said.
“It’s flu season now, and we’ve had very little seasonal flu,” she said. “That’s a good thing because we know that what is circulating now is H1N1.”
Wooten also reminded the 45 people attending the briefing that the seasonal flu kills about 36,000 people nationwide each year and that H1N1 isn’t approaching that number.
Solana Beach Presbyterian Church Pastor Tom Theriault said the message Wooten delivered was helpful for him to understand the dynamics of the swine flu.
“It’s also useful to me because I have grandkids and we have about 200 children that attend our preschool,” he said.
While there hasn’t been any outbreak at the preschool, Wooten said the county has had 19 school outbreaks to date.
An outbreak is when any school reports six or more cases occurring simultaneously.

Influenza Virus Scare: Watch Out Before You Kiss Your Valentine
Valentine’s Day is a day for love and romance, candlelit dinners and bubble baths, kissing and cuddling. However, if you or your partner is down with the flu, you might not be able to do any of the above. Kissing and getting intimate is the easiest way to spread the virus. Find out more about influenza below to avoid spreading the virus.
What is H1N1 virus?
H1N1 is a flu virus and is more commonly known as swine flu. It was first detected in the United States in April, 2009. It is named for a virus that pigs normally catch. This virus has now widely spread throughout the world contaminating almost 10% of the world’s population. The virus was originally called swine flu because of the genes, which are similar to that of flu viruses in pigs. The H1N1 flu virus is passed from person to person just like other flu strains. You cannot catch swine flu from eating pork.
How does H1N1 virus spreads?
Like most viruses, it enters the body through the mucous membranes – the eyes, the nose or the mouth. Swine flu is spread just as the regular seasonal flu spreads. It goes from person to person through close contact and direct touch, indirect touch, or respiratory droplets carrying the virus from person to person or from person to environmental surfaces through coughs and sneezes. If you touch where a person with swine flu touches, you will most likely pick up the virus and get the swine flu. That is how it spreads indirectly.
Precautions to be taken
You can help prevent the spread of germs that cause influenza by covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
You can take simple precautions to stay away from any contamination by:
Washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. You can also use alcohol-based hand cleaners.
Avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Trying to avoid close contact with sick people.
Staying home from work or school if you are sick.
Avoiding kissing and getting intimate with an infected person on Valentine’s Day
Influenza treatments
A number of methods have been recommended to help ease symptoms, including adequate fluid intake and rest. Over-the-counters pain medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen do not kill the virus; however they may be useful to reduce the symptoms. Aspirin must not be used (by anyone, but especially by people under 19) with any flu symptoms because of the risk of developing other symptoms.
At the moment there is only one prescription medication approved and widely used for the treatment of this condition.
Tamiflu (oseltamivir): It works by binding itself to the neuraminidase and stops the virus from spreading. When the neuraminidase is blocked, the newly formed viruses cannot be released from the infected cells. This prevents the flu virus from spreading and infecting other cells.

Everything that you should know about influenza
Influenza is a viral infection disease that is highly contagious, even a handshake with an infected individual can easily pass on the disease on for example. Masks and vaccines do help to protect you from the disease but cannot do much if you catch the virus. The only thing that remains for the treatment of influenza is medications like Tamiflu. This medicine is used for both prevention and treatment of influenza.
What is Influenza?
Influenza is an infectious viral disease. It is transmitted through droplet infection and can spread up to an endemic or epidemic form. It is more commonly seen during winter but may strike at any time. It impinges on people of all ages. The main effects of the influenza viruses on the body are seen on the upper respiratory tract, the nose and throat, and sometimes in the lungs and bronchi.
If you catch the influenza virus, the most common symptoms you may notice are chill, fever (102F to 104F), headaches, sleeping problems, weakness and severe muscular pain. Inflammation in the nose and throat spreading down the windpipe to the lungs, resulting in a sore throat, cough, running of the nose and eyes are some of the severe symptoms of influenza. If left untreated, influenza may carry a bigger threat leading to severe health problems. Therefore, it is very important to seek treatment for influenza.
How to treat influenza?
Tamiflu is a World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended drug, also approved by most health authorities across the globe. Tamiflu was recommended during the bird flu and swine flu pandemic and was stocked by many nations creating a shortage of the drug. Tamiflu is found to be effective in treating influenza A and B and also for avian influenza and swine influenza.
Medicines available for the treatment of influenza
Tamiflu belongs to a class of drug known as neuraminidase inhibitor like zanamivir. Both these are effective in treating influenza virus A and B, but the latter is to be inhaled and hence proved to be difficult for people with respiratory problems and also people were not sure about its dosage, as one cannot measure if he or she inhaled the right quantity or not.
Adamantane derivatives like Amantadine and Rimantadine are other possible modes of treatments for influenza but they are only effective for influenza A and do not work for the more complex influenza B.
Flu shots or vaccines are available for the prevention of influenza but they are not always up-to-date and viruses mutate faster than vaccines can be developed. Thus, even if you have had your shots, there might be a new virus looming around and your body would not be ready for the attack from this new virus. Tamiflu is the best option left for people who have influenza or been exposed to people who have influenza.
Consult a doctor and find out if Tamiflu is right for you.
